Naturaldyer OÜ set out to do something the textile industry said was impossible: make small-batch, fully biodegradable, naturally dyed fabric commercially viable. Its vision a "Virtual GigaFactory"connects every stakeholder in the bio-textile value chain, from farmers growing hemp and dye plants to designers ordering custom fabrics online in just a few clicks.

Founded in 2016 in Estonia, with a prototyping laboratory in Biella, Italy, Naturaldyer's innovative concept was funded by the EU Horizon 2020 SME Instrument Phase 1 in 2020, validating both its commercial potential and technological vision. To transform this ambitious concept into a scalable digital platform, Naturaldyer partnered with KGT Solutions to build the technology powering its connected, circular manufacturing ecosystem.

The textile industry is one of the most polluting in the world. The scale of the problem is hard to overstate:

  • Up to 10% of global CO₂ emissions come from fashion - more than international flights and maritime shipping combined.

  • 20% of global industrial water pollution is caused by textile dyeing and treatment (World Bank), which consumes over 5 trillion litres of water every year.

  • Less than 1% of clothing is ever recycled into new clothes; the equivalent of a garbage truck of textiles is landfilled or burned every second.

  • 500,000 tonnes of plastic microfibres are released into oceans annually from washing synthetic fabrics.

Behind the environmental crisis sits a structural business problem. Industrial mills demand minimum orders of 600 metres or more just to sample a fabric. That locks out the very people driving demand for sustainable textiles - independent designers, small ateliers and emerging brands - and leaves them no practical way to test or buy biodegradable material. Natural dyeing stayed an artisanal niche: unpredictable, unscalable and water-hungry.

The trigger: consumer interest in sustainable fashion grew significantly between 2016 and 2021, and EU Green Deal pressure on the sector kept rising - but no platform existed to connect that demand with certified bio-based supply.

KGT’s software team architected and built the NaturalDyers digital platform - the connective tissue between a physical dyeing laboratory, weaving partners and a global community of designers. In plain terms: it lets anyone design, price and order certified biodegradable fabric online, in quantities as small as five metres, dyed only with plants.

One platform solved four problems at once:

  • Huge minimums (600 m+) exclude small designers → An online fabric customizer lets designers personalize weave, yarn and colour on shared warp-chains, sampling from just 5 m - and lets consumers order single personalized items (MOQ 1).

  • Toxic synthetic dyes pollute rivers and harm health → A natural-dyeing laboratory produces colour recipes from plants, mushrooms and algae - no petrochemical dyes, no toxic mordants.

  • Dyeing wastes enormous volumes of water → A closed hydraulic system with photochemical oxidation treatment (UVC / H₂O₂ / O₃, with partner Dekonta) cleans and reuses dye and maceration wastewater instead of discharging it.

  • Clothes are worn a few times, then burned or landfilled → A refurbishment service sanitizes and overdyes worn garments with natural pigments, returning them to use instead of waste - recycling built into the business model.

  • Opaque supply chains hide “sustainable” claims → Every step from farm to garment is registered on the platform, enabling certification and eco-label traceability buyers can check.

What was hard: connecting a web platform to physical looms. The first-generation digital loom (Jacq3G) had no web connectivity at all, so the team re-architected the integration around newer browser-controlled loom technology (Compu-Dobby 5 / Jacq4G, with partner AVL Looms) and built the APIs that let the online customizer drive real machinery in the prototyping lab. A dispersed supplier base - farmers across multiple countries - was solved by anchoring the platform to established textile districts with local partners.

The most distinctive part of the solution is what happens after a garment has been worn. Most “sustainable fashion” stops at production. NaturalDyers closes the loop: faded, stained or dated garments are collected, sanitized, and overdyed with natural pigments - giving them a fresh colour and a second life. The platform’s software even calculates a garment’s deterioration rate to establish its value for the second-hand market.

Why it matters: every refurbished garment displaces a new one. That avoids the full environmental cost of production - the water to grow the fibre, the energy to spin and weave it, the chemicals to dye it, and the CO₂ to ship it - and diverts one more item from the landfill-or-incinerator fate that awaits 99% of clothing today.

Commercial validation followed the environmental case. The platform reached validated-prototype stage (TRL 8), demonstrated with real end users in an operational environment.

The feasibility study’s conversion analysis showed more than 80% of contacted prospects interested in the service; the prototype was demonstrated and validated with real end users in an operational environment; and the concept earned EU Horizon 2020 SME Instrument Phase 1 funding. The demonstrative sample catalogue alone generated approximately €80,000 in early revenues from the ERP/CRM-managed inventory.

The environmental gains scale directly with adoption: production-scale water, CO₂ and volume figures will be captured as the large-scale pilot moves the system from validated prototype (TRL 8) to full commercial operation (TRL 9).

The roadmap scales the model geographically: replicating the pilot plant across territorial harvesting areas near major textile districts (India, the US and Europe), so raw materials are processed close to where they grow - cutting transport emissions further - and expanding the refurbishment service into a full second-hand marketplace.
